The Race for Absolute Zero
Image

Scientists are attempting to reach absolute zero (-273 degrees Kelvin). Absolute zero became the Holy Grail of temperature physicists and is considered the gateway to many new technologies, such as nano-construction, neurological networks and quantum computing.

Albert Einstein predicted that within a few billionths of a degree above absolute zero would be a place so cold that the physical world as we know it doesn't exist, where electricity flows without resistance, fluids defy gravity and the speed of light can be reduced to 38 miles per hour.

Atoms close to absolute zero cease to be individual particles and become energy waves at rest that interlock each other. They become one energy, they cease to be solid matter.

It is important here to understand that Humans are creating temperatures so cold they do not exist anywhere in nature, not even in the coldest regions of deep space or even in black holes. So there are no models in nature to tell us what will actually happen at absolute zero. Reaching absolute zero looks to be even a more powerful event than the creation of nuclear fission in the 40's. It is possibly even more powerful than creating a black hole. We can observe black holes and we know their effects. We can not know the state of existence at absolute zero, because it does not exist. For the first time we are creating a state that has never existed before. If at a temperature close to absolute zero the speed of light slows to a mere 38 miles an hour, what would it do at absolute zero. We don't know. Would light slow to a stop, and time along with it?

The scientists are racing to reach absolute zero, without it seems looking at the consequences. Who knows, the state of absolute zero could start a chain reaction that could destroy the universe. This may sound alarmist but it is worth noting that before scientists tested the atomic bomb, they did not know if the nuclear reaction would continue and destroy the entire planet. They decided to "give it a try" anyway. With absolute zero we are facing an infinitely higher risk. This is a state of existence that will be entirely man made. Absolute zero again does not exist. We don't know what will be created. At the point of absolute zero a rift in spacetime could feasibly be created, a quasi black hole, or something even more destructive.
